POSITION TITLE: Nursing Liaison Librarian

A. ROLES AND OBJECTIVES OF THE UNIT
The Elizabeth Dafoe Library, one of the 8 unit libraries and 11 satellite information centres within the University of Manitoba Libraries, supports the teaching and research requirements of the faculty and students of the Faculties of Arts, Education, Environment, Earth and Resources, Extended Education, Human Ecology, Kinesiology and Recreation Management, Nursing, and Social Work. Service is also provided to other members of the university community and to the general public. The unit includes Circulation Services, Reference Services, and the Icelandic and Slavic Collections. The library contains over 830,000 books and bound periodicals; 430,000 government publications; 600,000 microforms; 100,000 maps; and subscribes to over 4,000 periodicals. It welcomes over 800,000 visitors per year and circulates approximately 200,000 items annually. The library performs the functions of access to collections, collection management, reference services, and instructional and information literacy services. Staff consists of a Unit Head, 13 librarians, 1 supervisor, 15 library assistants and approximately 5 F.T.E. part-time staff members.
The Reference Services Section serves faculty, and graduate and undergraduate students in the Faculties served by the Elizabeth Dafoe Library. The reference collection contains approximately 15,000 volumes as well as numerous electronic research tools. The Section handles over 20,000 enquiries per year. The staff includes a Head, 10.5 academic librarians, 4 library assistants, and several casual staff. The incumbent reports to the Head of the Elizabeth Dafoe Library and the Head of the Reference Services Section.
B. FUNCTIONS
As a member of the Reference Services Section, the Nursing Liaison Librarian participates in the development and maintenance of the goals and objectives of the Reference Services Section and the Elizabeth Dafoe Library. This position serves the Elizabeth Dafoe Library's broader community by providing personalized reference service in-person and through various virtual modes of delivery and by doing general and customized orientations and instruction sessions.
The liaison responsibilities of the Nursing Librarian include:
* Liaison. The librarian develops and maintains an understanding of the research and teaching programs of the Faculty and, on the basis of that understanding, plans for the future development of collections and services; liaises with all the Nursing teaching sites to ensure quality of service and maintenance of standards relating to collections and services; seeks opportunities for cooperation and collaboration with the faculty.
* Collection Development and Maintenance. The librarian develops and maintains the Nursing collection, ensuring that quality digital and print resources are available to support teaching and research.
* Reference Services. The librarian provides reference services via various modes of delivery, including specialized assistance to the nursing faculty and students.
* Instruction. The librarian provides instructional and information literacy services; collaborates with faculty on the development of training and the integration of library instruction into the curriculum. In collaboration with the off-campus library service, delivers library services and instruction to distant nursing students and faculty.
* Research and Service. The librarian engages in research and professional development activities; serves on appropriate committees, task forces and project teams.
