Ritual, repetition, 10 sections, creating bonds between parents and children, positive reinforcement, developmental tips, songs by Barbara Cass-Beggs, librarian as facilitator
9:45 -10:00 - (15 minutes) Break
10:00 - 10:35 - (35 minutes) Mother Goose on the Loose Demonstration-Betsy
Hands-on participation in a traditional Mother Goose on the Loose program
10:35 - 10:45 (10 minutes) Questions, observations
10:45 - 10:55 (10 minutes) How to plan your own MGOL programs-Betsy
Explanation for using the programming packet and keeping computer records
10:55 - 11:00 (5 minutes) - Early Literacy Enhanced Storytimes Model--Saroj
Incorporating early literacy tips/info in storytimes to help adults support their children's early literacy devt.
11:00 - 11:35 (35 minutes)-Early Literacy Enhanced Storytimes Demonstration--Saroj
Saroj demonstrated an early literacy enhanced storytime.
11:35 - 11:45 (10 minutes) - Questions, Observations
11:45 - 11:55 (10 minutes) - What's the Difference?-Saroj
Philosophical underpinnings to traditional and early literacy enhanced storytimes.
12:00 - 12:45 (45 minutes) Lunch
12:45 - 12:55 (10 minutes) A National Crisis -Betsy
Statistical data on early childhood, early literacy, and importance of early "interventions"
12:55 - 1:00 (5 minutes) School Readiness -Betsy
Quick review of all domains, include social and emotional, physical, attitude towards learning, and general knowledge about the world around us. Mention of arts, sciences, math, and social studies.
1:00 - 1:05 (5 min) Early Literacy Overview--Saroj
Definition and overview of early literacy, using ECRR1 structure
For each of the skills noted below (before and after Break), the following information is given:
Explanation of the skill, why it is important to later reading, what it looks like in a storytime setting, examples
of early literacy asides to adults related to the skill
1:05 - 1:15 (10 min) Print Motivation
1:15 - 1:30 (15 minutes) Vocabulary
1:30 - 1:50 (20 minutes) Narrative Skills
1:50 - 2:00 (10 minutes) Dialogic Reading
Demonstration of dialogic reading.
2:00 - 2:15 (15 minutes) Dialogic Reading Activity
Participants practice dialogic reading in pairs
2:15 - 2:30 (15 minutes) BREAK
2:30 - 2:50 (20 minutes) Phonological Awareness
2:50 - 2:55 (5 minutes) Print Awareness
2:55 - 3:05 (10 minutes) Letter Knowledge
3:05 - 3:10 (5 minutes) Questions & Comments
3:10 -3:15 (5 minutes) Connect the Dots-Betsy
Interactive game; participants describe ways in which each section MGOL strengthens early literacy and school readiness skills
3:15 - 3:30 (10 minutes) Instructions and make your own flannel pieces-Betsy
Participants choose a rhyme, add an activity to go with it, and create a flannel piece to serve as a visual representation of the rhyme


3:30-3:50 (20 minutes) Presentations--Betsy
Each participant presents their rhyme (via their flannel character) to the group, getting the opportunity to experience becoming a facilitator for a MGOL program
3:50 - 4:00 (10 minutes) Bellybutton, Kindergarten Wall, Closing-Betsy
Playful activities illustrate underpinning ideas of successful, research-based early literacy programs and end on a lively note. Evaluations requested
Day 2: Spreading the Word on Early Literacy
9:00 - 9:15 (15 minutes) Introduction/Quotes-Betsy
Fill in the missing part of each quote, see how it relates to early literacy and school readiness
10:05 - 10:10 (5 minutes) Questions, Comments
9:15 - 9:30 (15 minutes) Communicating with Parents and Caregivers-Saroj
Tips on communicating with adults during storytimes, use of early literacy asides
